KOPANELO Care Center & Soup Kitchen173-343 NPO
"KOPANELO" means 'getting together' Kopanelo care center is a non-profit Organisation with a three pillar vision that strives to help the community. The Organisation was established in 2016 by Rev L.D Thole, his wife and three members of their church. Rev Thole runs the centre on a fulltime basis and has no other employment. At the same time he oversees the running of the church. Kopanelo is located in Kagiso, a township situated in Krugersdorp west of Johannesburg in Gauteng Province, South Africa. The word kagiso means peace in Tswana Rev. Thole has been in the ministry since 2009. The reason behind starting the centre was because of the need of the community. The vision for the centre is to make it a one-stop centre where they can serve the community on a daily basis five days a week. When they started the soup kitchen, they had 30 members of their community who attended for a plate of food every week, and now the number of people has increased to an amount of 50 to 60 people; amongst whom 10 are children, 20 youth and the rest our elderly people. They have 30 unemployed youth at the centre - 10 of which are volunteers. |
THE THREE PILLARS OF THE ORGANIZATION
THE FIRST PILLAR IS CARING : The Kopanelo organization takes care of the elderly people and the disadvantaged community members. They identify people who do not have identity/ citizenship documents and Kopanelo assists them. Children who do not have birth certificates are assisted and their parents are supported by Kopanelo in the application process.
THE SECOND PILLAR IS SERVING : Serving the community through the soup kitchen five days a week ,with a healthy nutritious meal. Kopanelo also aim to provide their elderly people with food parcels once a month, but have yet to start that process due to lack of funds. Most of their community members are unemployed and do not qualify for social grants hence Kopanelo wants to help them by providing these food parcels.
THE THIRD PILLAR IS TEACHING : Teaching and developing the community's children. Kopanelo have a creche and an after care program for the primary school children whereby they help them with homework and other school projects daily and also provide them with snacks during the time.
Kopanelo aims to further invest in the youth with skills development programs such as computer skills and entrepreneurship skills.
*They have not started with the skills program yet because they do not have equipment.
The centre is providing motivational talks to the youth and the community about substance abuse, teenage pregnancy and crime. The center has a school holiday program to help and keep the youth and children out of the dangerous pitfalls of the streets and lead them away from committing crime, by hosting different activities through out the holidays.
